Our initial plans for a long backpacking lap of Zirbitzkogel were scuppered when we discovered a large military training ground atop our first campsite. Not comfortable pitching up amongst bullet-ridden tanks and shell casings, we retreated to safety across the ridgeline. Day 2 passed much more smoothly, especially with the surprise addition of an open hut serving tea, beer and jausen.
After last week's scouting mission in pouring rain, we headed back to Naughty Ischl and hiked to the base of the Katrin Klettersteig. It was Erinna's first real mountain klettersteig, so after a few worms she set off up the stemples like a salamander, topping out into the sunshine.
Without a car we had no need to make a circular tour, so we crossed over to the Rosskopf and descended the valley to Windhag to catch the bus back to Salzburg.
Short hike up Zwölferhorn for some new views of Wolfgangsee. Quarantine haircuts out in force.
What better hike for our first post-lockdown adventure than a trip up the Dopplersteig to the summit of Untersberg. A dusting of fresh snow was there to greet Chris on his first ascent of this iconic Salzburg mountain.
